Understanding Controlled-Environmental Agriculture

Controlled-Environmental Agriculture (CEA) is the production of crops in a protected environment where growers are able to maintain the most advantageous growing conditions.

This includes adjusting for temperature, humidity, light intensity, and nutrient concentrations.

The key advantage of CEA is ensuring resource efficiency and producing consistent yields throughout the year without the use of the chemicals used in open fields and traditional farming environments.

Our CEA projects

Container Farms

  • Kroptek was the first company in the UK to convert a shipping container into a working strawberry farm.
  • Container farms are Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) solutions where every aspect of the plant growing condition is controlled.
  • With container farms, you can achieve multiple crop cycles in one year while drastically reducing water consumption and without using pesticides.
  • Most crops can be grown in a container farm, such as soft fruit, leafy greens, aromatic herbs and cannabis.
  • Container farms are excellent for R&D applications and have been used by our partners to study specific cultivars.

Innovate UK grant funding

  • Kroptek won an R&D grant funding from Innovate UK, the United Kingdom’s innovation agency, a non-departmental public body operating at arm’s length from the Government as part of the United Kingdom Research and Innovation organisation.
  • Alongside academic and commercial partners, Kroptek is involved in the development of a fully integrated CEA solution with photovoltaic glass used in glasshouses.
  • This initiative sits alongside Kroptek’s several other R&D initiatives including the use of ultraviolets in horticulture lighting.

Kroptek R&D farm

  • Our team developed several solutions from our experience with running our own farm in Surrey.
  • The challenge of every commercial farm is profitability and this is largely dependent on the decisions made in the planning phase of the project.
  • Kroptek has offered consulting services to project developers and shared practical lessons learnt from our own project.
